la fête des mamans

Here in France it is mother's day, and although my children are  no longer at the stage where I am given painted jam jars or papier maché frames around hand written poems (oh HOW I loved those days!), it is still a day to look forward to, and a day to reflect.

Of course a mother's life is filled with tender moments, with proud moments, with much happiness, and pure joy.  But along with the easy bits, comes the power to encourage or deflate; the responsibility to support and defend; and the moral duty to guide and protect.

As mothers we have the complicated task of encouraging and stretching without setting the target too high to reach.   We must be the ones to stand strong when the rest of the world wobbles; to be firm when others are indifferent.  And maybe hardest of all, especially when there are teenagers at home, we are the ones to set the boundaries.

Today, I'm thinking particularly about mothers raising children alone.  Who, for whatever reason, don't have a partner beside them to share the task of parenthood.    If you are raising children alone, be it by choice, by family circumstance, if you have lost your partner or simply parted ways, I salute you and I admire you.

Bonne fête des mamans!

PS  No loot shoot this week, so sorry.  On Mother's Day I am allowed to lie in a little later!  :)

a big thank you to Graphics Fairy for the great images!
